Four tips for when you make an insurance claim
First, work through our list of things to think about before you claim on your car or home or life policy.
When you are ready to make a claim:
- Tell the insurance company about the event as soon as possible. If this is by phone you will usually be asked to complete a claim form afterwards. Include as many details as possible of the incident.
- Be completely frank about the circumstances surrounding your claim, even if they are personally embarrassing. It is better to be honest than have to change your story later (even for innocent reasons). This could result in an investigation and a delay in payment of your claim, or in it being refused.
- Produce all documents or records supporting your claim.
- Cooperate with the insurer and the people they employ to help assess the claim, such as investigators or doctors.
