Teacher resource for NSW commerce syllabus


Years 7-10

Read FIDO's tips for young adults about organising their finances and investing.

We've lots of valuable information on our websites (asic.gov.au and fido.asic.gov.au) that can be used when teaching personal finance and consumer rights to young people. This guide is specifically written for the NSW commerce syllabus (years 7-10). It gives links to pages on our websites that are relevant to specific topics and learning outcomes in the syllabus. We presented this guide at the MESSTA Inc Commerce Conference on 19 March 2004 and the teachers were very supportive of the initiative.

Core Part 1.1 Consumer choice

Students learn how to identify, research and evaluate options when making decisions related to solving those problems and issues that confront consumers.

Core Part 1.2 Personal finance

Students develop knowledge, understanding and skills that assist them to achieve financial independence by developing the ability to make informed judgements and to take effective decisions regarding the use and management of money.

Core Part 2.2 Employment issues

Students learn about the commercial and legal aspects of employment issues by focusing on their options, rights and responsibilities in the work environment.

Option 1 Investing

Students learn about the range of investment options and how to make wise investment decisions.

Option 2 Promoting and selling

Students analyse the strategies that sellers use to promote products and maximise sales and evaluate the impact on consumers.

Option 3 E commerce

Students learn how to use the internet for researching commercial and legal information, and buying and selling goods and services.

Option 4 Global links

Students learn about the effect of globalisation on our commercial and legal environment and assess the impact on the individual, the economy and society.

Option 5 Towards independence

Students develop problem-solving and decision-making skills to assist them in relation to commercial and legal issues which may affect them when they leave home.

Option 7 Travel

Students learn how to plan for travel and how to solve problems encountered when travelling.

Option 11 Running a business

Students become actively engaged in planning, organising and running a small business and develop strategies to address problems as they arise.
